Having surgery and going home the same evening

Having  outpatient surgery and leaving the Institute on the day of the operation is now possible in many cases in oncology. This solution suits   the majority of patients.

" In senology, one out of two   patients can be offered surgery on an outpatient basis. It has been 4 years since this specific service was created at the Institut Claudius Regaud. The good results obtained have led to the increased development of this service  " said Dr. Helene Charitansky, coordinator of this activity at the IUCT Oncopole.

Progress in surgical techniques and anesthesia has made it possible to perform even complex surgery on an outpatient basis. Patients return home a few hours after surgery. " This is primarily a psychological comfort for patients who avoid  several  days   of hospitalization.  It  also reduces the risk of exposure to nosocomial infections  "  adds Helen   Charistanky.

The choice of offering outpatient surgery means that care organization must be closely supervised.
The important thing is not only the surgical or anesthetic technique  ; but also  the Institute's organization of the management of  patients with very different needs as regards their care. Guaranteeing that the procedures will be carried out in a short time, as safely as possible, and that the patients will be kept comfortable, calls for flexible organization and specific training for all professionals engaged in this activity : secretaries, nurses, surgeons and anesthetists.

Specific monitoring at home
" The day before surgery, the patient is called at home to check that everything is in order from a medical and administrative point of view" says Helen Charitansky. The day after surgery, the team sets a telephone appointment  to assess the patient's medical condition and to identify any possible problems. A continuous round-the-clock service is available to patients and their primary care physicians.
