Intraoperative radiotherapy at the IUCTO

Intraoperative radiotherapy at the IUCTO

Since December, intraoperative  radiotherapy has been offered  to a number of patients with breast  cancer. This innovative technique, performed in a single session, simultaneously combines surgery and radiation.

For breast cancer, radiotherapy is generally indicated after tumor resection. Irradiation of surrounding tissues reduces the risk of local recurrence. In some cases, this radiotherapy is now done in a single session during surgery  : immediately after removal of the tumor, a single dose of radiation is delivered in direct contact with the operated area.
The new technique provides the same benefits as conventional treatments carried out over five weeks (25 sessions) and has fewer side effects. It is also less challenging for the patient, since the entire treatment takes place in one day.

Intraoperative radiotherapy is prescribed based on the characteristics of the disease of each patient.
