The department has 30 anatomical pathologists and cytopathologists and 65 technicians.
The department's activities are divided into eight areas : reception, macroscopic examinations, morphology, clinical trials, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy, molecular biology, cytology and imaging platform.
Given its size and activity, it is one of Europe's primary anatomical pathology laboratories.
A member of the INCa-accredited (since 2010) national network of referrals centers, it is the regional referrals center for four rare cancers:
- lymphomas – Lymphopath (Prof. P. Brousset);
- malignant pleural mesotheliomas and rare retroperitoneal tumors – Mesopath (Dr. I. Rouquette);
- soft tissue and visceral sarcomas – RRePS (Dr. P. Rochaix and Dr. S. Le Guellec);
- and rare neuroendocrine tumors – TENpath (Dr. Marie Danjoux).
It is also a national coordinator, alongside Creteil, for the Lymphopath network (12,000 cases per year).
The anatomical pathology team works closely the units of the Purpan and Rangueil IUCTs that analyze specimens immediately via a telepathology device (virtual slides).
